The State historical-cultural and literary-memorial reserve-museum of Abai “Zhydebai-Borili” was created following the decree of Sovnarkom of Kazakh SSR from April 1, 1940. Its opening ceremony was held on October 16, 1940 in the time of celebration of 95 years since poet’s birth. It was the first literary-memorial museum in Kazakhstan history. In the years of beginning museum was established in the houses of Bekbai Baisov and Aniyar Moldabaev. Those were the places where Abai stayed during his visits to Semei. In 1967 museum exposition was removed into the house of a merchant Roman Ershov. The literary-memorial museum of Abai was reorganized into The State historical-cultural and literary-memorial reserve-museum of Abai “Zhydebai-Borili” following the decree of Soviet Ministers of Kazakh SSR from April 5, 1990 in the time of celebration of 150 years since poet’s birth. It includes: city complex and museum filially which are in Abai, Urdzhar districts. The city complex is composed of the main museum, the Ahmet Riza madrasah-mosque where Abai studied and an administrative building. The museum exposition is devoted to the life and work of poet and includes 16 halls. There are the most valuable exhibit items of Abai, rare books, the documental materials. Museum “Alash activists – M.Auezov” was established by Auezov’s 100 years anniversary in the house of Aniyar Moldabaev in 1997. The museum was dedicated to the Semey period of life and work of M.Auezov and to the Alashorda activists. The state reserve-museum of Abai includes: literary house-museum of M.Auezov in Borili, the house-museum of Abai in Zhydebai, “Shakarim Sayatkorasy” exposition, mausoleum complex “Abai-Shakarim” and a 6400-hectare preserved area, museum of Kokbai Zhanataev in Takyr, house-museum of Shakir Abenov in Kundyzdy village of Abai district and the museum of Aset Naimanbaev in Makanchy village of Urdzhar district. Zhydebai is the homeland of Kunanbai family. Abai spent the last 10 years of his life in Zhydebai. These years were filled with the productive writing work. Abai wrote his lyrical poems, “Words of wisdom” and the translations from Lermontov, Krylov works. The exhibition of the house-museum is devoted to the life and work of poet in Zhydebai. Borili is the homeland and winter stay of Auezov family. M.Auezov’s childhood and teenage years were passed there. The museum exposition is devoted to the life and work of writer. Historical places in Borili: M.Auezov’s parents – “Omarkhan-Nurzhamal” mausoleum, M.Auezov’s birth place – Ayakkaragan, graves of Abai’s wives Dilda and Aigerim, his elder son Akilbai. The preserved area includes historical places as: the house-museum of Abai in Zhydebai, mausoleum complex “Abai-Shakarim”, Erkezhan’s grave, “Zere-Ulzhan-Kudaiberdi”, “Kengirbai” mausoleums, Kunanbai’s well, Ospan lake, “Shakarim Sayatkorasy” exposition and Shaukenbai-Gabitkhan graves. Today Zhydebai is a place of pilgrimage, a kind of literary Mecca. In Takyr, about 40 kilometres from Zhydebai, there are museum and mausoleum of the follower of Abai’s literary traditions, kazakh poet Kokbai Zhanataev. One of the followers of Abai’s literary traditions, poet, singer, composer Aset Naimanbaev’s museum placed in Makanchy village of Urdzhar district. Thematical excursions, lectures, literary parties, exhibitions, scientific conferences are often organized in the reserve-museum of Abai. Nowadays the state reserve-museum of Abai has 20376 exhibit items in fund and 13425 books are in it’s scientific library. The State historical-cultural and literary-memorial reserve-museum of Abai is the member of ICOM and works in close connection with large literary museums of Russia.
