On February 5, 2004, in the city of Oskemen, at the intersection of Auezov and Slavsky streets, on the right embankment of the Irtis, on the waterfront, a very beautiful memorial was erected to commemorate the soldiers-internationalists who died in Afghanistan. The memorial complex dedicated to the memory of internationalist soldiers was opened on November 16, 2004. It is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the beginning and 15 years since the end of the military company in Afghanistan, in which hundreds of our compatriots were killed. On the stone memorial plaque, the names of the deceased East Kazakhstanis were stamped and the real pictures of the war depicted. The complex is set on the right bank of the Irtis. The soldiers of the Soviet Union were fighting for nine years in Afghanistan. During this time, only according to official lists, over 14,000 young Soviet soldiers died, including 89 East Kazakhstani and Oskemen guys. Many sons, brothers and fathers did not return from service in Afghanistan, they died during fulfilling their duty, the memory of them thanks to the monument will be in the hearts and minds of the new generation.
